Current GDC Projects:![]() Several years ago the GDC ran a series of community focus group in an effort to identify the most pressing community issues. After talking with over 150 community members from all sectors of the greater Dover community we decided to focus our efforts in two main areas: Youth as it relates to recreation and the need for affordable wrap around after school/summer care services and the revitalization of downtown Dover. Sub-committees were formed to focus on these two areas and projects were developed. Below you will find a description of the projects we have pursued since we ran our focus groups.
Mentoring Works Summit: Join us on January 26 at the Dover Sheraton. Click here for more information. Click here for PDF flyer. Click here for a story about the mentoring program. Economic Development Committee focuses on Kent County Sports Facility: On October 7, the Greater Dover Committee voted to give $10,000 toward a feasible study for the Kent County Sports Facility. This athletic complex would contain 15 multi-purpose fields for soccer, lacrosse, field hockey and football, and possibly a lighted stadium with seating for up to 1,000 as well as a concession stand and pro shop. The Greater Dover Committee has committed to raise the additional funds needed to pay for the feasibility study. Donations are tax deductible and checks should be made out to the Greater Dover Foundation c/o Kent County Sports Complex Fund. If you have questions, comments or need additional information, please contact Executive Director, Shelly Cecchett (302-570-0563). Greater Dover Committee Vision Sessions: The Greater Dover Committee is working in conjunction with the City of Dover and Kent County to develop a vision for the youth of our community. Youth leaders in the community have come together to create a Vision Statement that will give our community a goal to work towards for our youth. These sessions will be led by Greater Dover Committee member Alan Kovitz, founding partner of Elevations Unlimited and his partner. The idea stems from the belief that if we share a common vision, than we can all work together towards a common goal. Participants include:
Youth Organization Round Table Discussions: Following the GDC youth committee Vision Session, the GDC will organize a series of youth committee round table discussions. These meetings will include representatives from the various youth organizations, area youth and members of the GDC youth committee in the greater Dover area. The purpose of these discussions will be to open the lines of communication among the various groups and to identify current and future needs. In addition, there is the potential for these discussions to open the door for future program and/or capital partnership. A letter and questionnaire has gone out to approximately 30 local organizations. If your organization did not receive one please review the letter and complete the questionnaire. Data from the questionnaires will be used to help plan/organize the round table discussions.
Downtown Dover
Sub-Committee and Projects: In
2005, after researching the needs of our downtown, the GDC raised 60,000
and hired HyettPalma, a nationally recognized consulting firm, to
complete a comprehensive study of our downtown. The
Other projects currently being researched: The GDC continues to research the ever changing needs in our community and plans to develop projects based on these needs. At the present time the GDC is in the process of researching the City’s efforts to build a Dover Anchor Library Greater Dover Foundation Community Building and the Delaware Civic Center Corporation’s efforts to construct a Civic Center in Kent County.
If you or another community member have ideas and/or suggestions for projects the GDC may be interested in researching, please send us an e-mail. |
