Greater Dover Boys and Girls Club: After researching the current
non-profit organizations in the area the GDC identified the Greater
Dover Boys and Girls Club as one of the key organization that has the
potential to meet the need of providing affordable wrap around after
school/summer care services for our youth. Their biggest obstacle,
however, is that they do not have the necessary presence in Dover due to
a lack of adequate facilities. They are currently serving approximately
300 youth in greater Dover and state statistics suggest that they should
be serving close to 2000 given our population. The Boys and Girls
Club mission is to inspire and enable all young people
especially those who need them most, to realize their full potential as
productive, responsible and caring citizens. To help the Boys and Girls
Club realize their mission we have partnered with their local board and
assisted them in securing a land donation from the City of Dover for a
new magnet facility. This 30,000-50,000 square foot facility, once
complete, will be located at Schutte Park and will have a variety of
amenities including gymnasiums for a variety of sports, a full size
pool, classrooms for classes, computers and art, office space and a
large conference room. The Boys and Girls Club will partner with other
community organizations and this new facility will serve as a “community
club” to be used and enjoyed by ALL children. GDC representatives
continue to work with representatives from the Greater Dover and State
Boys and Girls club to develop site plans and schematics for the new
facility. In addition, the GDC will assist the local Boys and Girls
Club with their fundraising efforts once they begin.
